 "Great" 2009-09-26
By Grimmfaust
Just what I needed, shipped fast at a great price and in perfect condition. Yes, not the same exact ones used by studios (those have patents on them). Just the binding edge is slightly more square, and blue color just slightly off, but close enough. Blends in with the rest of my Blu's, especially since now there are 4 different cases being used by studios...here a description of the four I know about...

Normal sized with stamped Blu logo

Normal sized with embossed silver Blu logo

Normal sized with embossed silver Blu logo with "holes" on both sides of case (uses less plastic)

Thinner sized with snap closer and embossed silver Blu logo in oval

Not to mention the three types of two disc cases...plus 3 disc cases, 4 disc..etc.

"Better cases then the one movies come in" 2009-07-26
By Randall D. Lind (St. Petersburg, Florida)
I find these to be better cases then the ones Blu-ray movies come in. I had to buy these cause one fell off my DVD shelf and cracked the bottom round edge and no longer would close.

I like these cases cause they are square like normal DVD cases and are thicker and stronger. The retail ones movies come in feel thin and cheaply made.

"I don't think these are Elite cases either" 2009-04-05
By Andrew Scarr (Cincinnati, OH USA)
I agree with Fernado's differentiation between Elite's cases and Amaray's cases. However, I don't think these are either. Looking at my movie collection, the Elite boxes have an "ELITE TM" logo embossed inside the case to the left and below where the disc is kept, whereas these cases have no embossing. Although Elite cases are not a rounded as Amaray's, they are more so than the one's being sold here (especially on the binding which is quite obvious lined up on the bookshelf). These cases are also a slightly different shade of blue, and I think they are thicker as well (I don't have calipers to test, but I have struggled to slide them into cardboard covers that surrounded some of my Elite cases.

 "These are Elite cases" 2008-04-02
By Fernando Lopez
To those that care, these are cases produced by Elite not Amaray. Sony and Disney use Amaray cases with the embossed bluray logo and folding latch, Elite cases(Fox and Warner) are squarer and have their bluray logo stamped on and dont have the latch. Also Elites are slightly thicker then Amarays

decent cases if your looking for replacements but I perfer the Amarays for ALL my blurays

"15 pack spindle not all are good" 2009-10-01
By Timcap (los angeles, ca United States)
For more than a year I have consumed several memorex 15 pack spindles purchased from various merchants. I started using these when the price was around $6 each. At first every disc in the spindle were good, that was around 2 to 3 spindles. After that not all 15 discs were good when the price drops to more or less $3 each. Particularly the last 2 to 3 discs (at the bottom) are coasters. Everytime I open a new spindle I always use the bottom discs first and as expected 2 to 3 are coasters. These discs are manufactured by Ritek. Memorex, Ridata, and maxell are all manufactured by Ritek with identical codes. All 3 brands have coasters starting from the bottom disc of the spindle. Lately I purchased 3 spindles and opened it simultaneously and used the bottom discs first respectively, and found coasters each at least one. So when I calculate the cost of each disc, I divide the cost of the 15pk spindle by 12 (not 15). I still find it cheaper compared to verbatim. If its not a coaster, the quality to me is at par with verbatim. These discs writes at 4x with my buffalo mediastation blu-ray/HD-DVD combo writer which I discovered to be made by panasonic.

 "Copying movies." 2009-09-14
By Ronald J. Nelson Jr.
If you are looking to back up movies you already own then you are S.O.L..

Most blu ray movies are over 25 gb or just 1 gb over. If you thought this is a deal guess again. It is cheaper to buy doubles of the movie than getting this bundle. Realisicly, you will have to always go for the 50 gb discs everytime to back up all your movies that you already own. So, these discs are totally useless, and are only good for backing data up. Do the math, and you will see large capacity 2 tb harddrives are much cheaper. HollywOod, and the disc makers are working hand in hand to screw the consumer. By the way, you are all welcome for my advice . DVD is far from dead to the average consumer; thanks OBAMA bin laden for this economic crisis...

So much fun- set was easy, deciding whether to go wireless or wired took some thought. I decided wireless, My home is wireless using a Linksys WRT545G saving $$ using a WGA54G Gaming adapter as bridge instead of a normal bridge to connect, I highly recommend letting a Linksys Technician do a remote using you computer to set that up- and it works great with a few minutes the Firmware update was downloaded, I was on Viera Cast linked my Picasa web album and linked my Amazon account to the Viera cast by Registering my Blu-Ray registration code generated on Viera Cast- to get Amazon Video-On-Demand, was able to Get YouTube, set my local weather to default. Next purchase will be sound system.

 "Great low-end product" 2009-10-06
By James E. Boardman (SW Michigan, USA)
I returned a low end Magnavox BluRay player to Walmart when I received this Panasonic. The difference is as between night and day. The picture quality is superb - the sound quality amazing. I use it with my NEC projector and an eight foot screen. The setup was a snap and loading time is half what it was with the Magnavox. Overall, I am very happy with the machine. One thing - don't go out and purchase duplicate BluRay DVDs to replace your older non-BluRay discs. It is not necessary. A regular DVD looks fantastic on this machine. Save your money for new releases. If you want to see what this machine can really do, buy the BBC Earth series Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series. The quality is stunning. I would highly recommend this machine for anyone looking to try BluRay for the first time.

"Solid Player - Good integration with Panasonic Plasma Viera" 2009-10-05
By J. Romanski
This Blu-Ray player works very well. No hitches on setup. It integrates well with my Panasonic Viera 42" Plasma set.

This is the first player I've owned that upconverts standard DVDs. I'm not crazy about this. To me the colors looks overly saturated and I don't think the picture is as good. Not sure if this is the player or simply this is what upconversion is all about. I prefer to play standard DVDs at their standard resolution.

Since I bought this player for its Blu-Ray capabilities I'm giving it 5 stars.

"Harman is amazing as always" 2009-10-02
By Alex Vox (Winnetka, IL)
Well, let me disagree with previous reviewers, as it looks they are some HK bashers. My experience with it is of different sort. I own another Blu-Ray player, highly rated LG BD300, and while it is great machine, with plethora of connections and offers Netflix on-board, HK definitely has an edge when it comes to picture and sound quality.

If this thing is connected to Harman's receiver (I have 3490) and great TV (I have 60pg60) the sound and picture will leave you breathless. The difference , as it is always with high quality equipment, is noticeable when all elements of signal chain is of decent quality. In this device all efforts are toward visual/audio experience. Blu-Ray of Celine's show (which is superb both visually and sonically) was played and sounded and looked like never before!

I also can't share other reviewers complains about "slowness" of the device. Again, I have LG bd300 which is highly rated for its rapid load, and so I expected (based on the reviews) some much slower timing from BDP-1. Well, if you would stay with stop-watch and time it, may be it is somewhat slower (I did not timed it), but for normal use, I can't detect any appreciable difference. As I sit down to watch movie, would it load in 20 sec or in 24 makes no difference to me.

In short, if you have a decent tv and sound system, get it. The picture is worth a thousands words.

 "Huge disappointment!" 2009-07-20
By W. Helander (il)
As a fan of H/K products, I was very disappointed by the quality of this very expensive product. It is slow and sd upconverting that is about the same as my PS3. Without analog outputs, I am shocked that H/K thinks they can charge $400 for this player!

 "Over-priced, Under-featured, and Painfully slow" 2009-07-12
By WDH
I picked one up friday (7/10) from Frys. My first inpressions are the H/K offers a very classy design with medium build quality; it's not as heavy and sturdy as my Pioneer 320, similar to an LG 390. The disc tray is noisy and has an uneven speed that worries me it might be problematic over time. It does not shut with the authority or quality of the onkyo dv bd606 or denon dvd 2500btci. The unit itself is medium sized and fits nicely in a rack - similar in footprint to the pioneer 320.

DSCN0924.jpg

The remote is awful (pictured) DSCN0925.jpg- it has a bulbous end and few of the most used buttons (pop-up menu/disc menu) are in a logical place. I spent five minutes studying the layout to find most buttons. From this perspective, I can say it's not very intuitive or ergonomic. It does have a discrete on/off button.

The player is profile 2.0 with a LAN connection on the rear of the unit. The player can decode the lossless codecs, but lacks analogue outputs for older receivers. This is very disappointing for its price level - most $300 players have this ability.

Performance

Speed

The player is disappointing slow. It takes roughly 20 seconds to power on. Pressing eject when powered off takes a painful 19 seconds for the tray to open, venturing into Pioneer -slow territory. Menu response time is medium. I noticed in running it through synthetic tests it was on the slower side of players.

Disc load times were also on the slowish side. Casino Royale took 37 seconds, a second behind the Pioneer 320 and twice as slow as the JVC XV-BP1 or Oppo BDP83. Java discs like the Pirates of Carribbean were equally slow, reaching the disney splash screen in a minute flat (the $200 JVC can reach the same spot in 27 seconds).

BD Performance

BD at 1080P 24fps was excellent and on par with most other players.

SD DVD Performance

I had high hopes for the H/K in this segment and its results were a bit disappointing and very much mid-pack. It did well on synthetic tests with the usual film cadences, but struggled on video-based material, with noticeable jaggies in the speedometer test S&M offers. The video-based samples in the S&M test disc demonstrated its poor performance.

In real-world material, I would rate the performance mediocre. I prefer the Oppo, Pioneer 320, Denon 2500, and JVC to its image, but would say its overall sd dvd upscaling quality is adequate. That said, it is disappointing when you consider its $500 price tag.

Closing Thoughts

This player is priced about twice as much as its featureset and PQ offer. I cannot recommend this player at its current price point in an ever-completitive marketplace. The Pioneer 320 offers superior performance, analogue outputs, and better tweaking menus at $200 less. The JVC XV BP1 offers quicker performance, better sd dvd upconversion and is $300 less.

Now Blu-ray means something else too: an entirely new movie-viewing experience, made possible by Final Standard Profile, which adds features never seen before, like four Picture-in-Picture modes including Enhanced Commentary (from directors and actors), Backstage Pass, Peek Behind the Animation and Audio Mixing. The image motion of each pixel is then categorized into one of 16 levels, from stationary to super fast. Image quality is further enhanced by Diagonal Processing, which creates smooth, sharp diagonal lines, and 3:2 Pull-Down, which optimizes the processing accordingly for film or video making the images look natural and lifelike. In addition, the DMP-BD30's HDMI output is Deep Color compatible, with 4,096 steps of gradation for even smoother, finer-quality images that meet Hollywood's stringent demands. The Blu-ray is excellent, charges the movies fast and has a very functional remote control.

"great blu-ray player for older receivers!" 2009-03-13
By Anti-Climacus (waco, tx)
This is a great blu-ray player and the only one so far to play dvd-audio (now the Oppo does as well for 500 bones), so if that interests you then you are getting a two-for-one deal. This receiver does (contra previous reviews) decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS High Resolution, but not DTS-HD Master. Dolby TrueHD discs like The Dark Knight sound incredible, and of course if a disc has a lossless PCM file (like the first Hellboy or Cars) then this player will pass the lossless sound either over hdmi or the 7.1 analog outputs (this has been confirmed in several forums - the problem is that Panasonic techs do not know what they are talking about). Thus the 7.1 analog outputs are useful for getting the lossless sound of both bds and dvd-audios to older receivers like mine (the exception begin DTS-HD master like Hellboy 2). The picture is great, but the load time is a little slow. Once it gets going, however, the picture and sound are well worth it!

 "firmware updates are sloooooooow" 2009-01-20
By Tom the engineer (Colorado)
I have owned this product for approximately sixteen months. 'great sound, and picture; but a little slow to turn on and load a disk.

My unit shipped with version 2.3 firmware and recently needed a newer version in order to run newer bluray disks. I had to download from the Japanese website because the North American website did not have the latest version (2.5). The first download froze. The second attempt was going to take six hours so I terminated it. The third attempt took about an hour and a half. Everything went smoothly after this.

 "Misleading Panasonic..." 2008-12-05
By Blue Subie (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United States)
... some might call it lying.

I called Panasonic after hours spent on my Yamaha AV receiver (RX-V863) and the BD10AK menus. The problem: I couldn't get my receiver to push Dolby True HD audio, only PCM or regular Dolby Digital through my 7.1 speakers. Although there are Dolby True HD stickers on the unit itself, the manual actually states that if the media has Dolby True HD or DTS-HD as its soundtrack, the BD-10AK will ONLY playback in Dolby Digital.

So which is true?

The result of the phone call: the BD-10AK does NOT push Dolby True HD, nor DTS-HD. This was straight from technician Curtis at Panasonic. So my Yamaha receiver will take the audio signal and try to push it as best as it can - hopefully converting it to True HD on the way out.

I had already loaded the firmware upgrade from the Panny website (pretty easy). Load times are OK (this is my first blu-ray player). The video is GORGEOUS from blu-ray discs - tested Iron man and the 1st Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Upconverted (up to 1080i) DVD playback is great - tested Ratatouille. Outside of some artifacts, I thought it looked better than playing it through my Yamaha DVD player.

One major reason I bought this 2-year old (since introduced to the general public) Panasonic BD player is its DVD-Audio playback; I have a small collection. It plays back in 5.1, and the newer models do NOT play DVD-A's.

Until I upgrade to a PS3 (or whatever Sony is pushing years from now), the BD10AK will do.

Upgrade to 4 stars due to its ability to play my Chinese DVDs.

 "Perfect" 2008-07-29

Own mine now for about a year. No problems and picture is awesome! Viewing on a 1080p Panasonic set. I did update the firmware a few months ago and it helped with loading some BD's. Note that some BD disc will be better quality than others. Not the players fault, just the way they compressed the videos.

 "Fantastic Blu-Ray Player" 2008-05-21
By Ivan P. Wiest (Robertsdale, AL)
The Panasonic DMP-BD10A is a high quality Blu-Ray player. Start up times (once the power button is hit to time disk tray will come out)are as fast as my upconvert DVD player...Much faster than the Sony BDP-S300 I use to own. Also the play times (time from when disk is put into player and see disk contents on the TV) are also just as fast as my upconvert DVD player. Picture quality is out of this world! Cannot comment on audio since I'm still using the speakers on my LCD. I wish I would have bought this player instead of my Sony Blu-ray to begin with. Panasonic certainly put a lot of thought and quality into this machine. My only gripe is the remote could have been better laid out, but really no big deal. Some have complained about the flip-down front panel, but I personally like it b/c it hides all the unsightly buttons one typically sees on Blu-ray players. The panel gives this player a handsome appearance. I highly recommend this Panasonic Blu-ray player!!
