"Too many problems, too little support" 2009-10-01
By Michael Freedman (California United States)
I've owned this unit for about 1.5 years. It's been swapped out twice, and continues to have problems (now, playback pauses and restarts). It is no longer listed on their web site, there are no firmware upgrades, and you can no longer reach tech support for it by phone. This is a failed product and Sharp has abandoned it and their customers.

"Horrible Player I have sent back and still it doesn't work" 2009-09-16
By Paragon (USA)
I bought this player as my first Blue Ray Player and most expensive media player. It worked for one movie and then there were incompatible disc problems and problems with the hook up and sometimes it didn't start at all. I sent back to Sharp after hours of troubleshooting, and I work in the the electronic connections business, I was told to send it in. I sent it in and got it back in the same condition. One more thing is the firmware, I have uploaded new firmware on Sharps suggestion and now you can't even get it because their support site for this product has been down for months. This is a bad product and I would not recommend buying it, do a quick search on Google and you will find many people with the same opinion.

 "What a nightmare" 2009-08-01
By H. Catuzo (Port Angeles, WA)
This player was a freebee with a television we purchased about 18 months ago. I'm being generous in giving it 1 star. It deserves -10. Simply put, since purchasing a new release last fall (Bangkok Dangerous) we have not had a blu ray disc play. Bangkok never has. The player simply gives an "incompatible disc" error, even on discs that previously worked fine. We've tried reinstalling the latest (October, 2008) software, but the player says the version is already installed. We've tried resetting to factory settings to no avail. Please do not spend your money on this product. In retrospect, free wasn't cheap enough.

"Avoid this dvd player unless it is free!" 2009-07-27
By Marko Pollo (raleigh, nc United States)
I have owned this Sharp blu-ray player for over a year. I have done the firmware updates, which were a real pain! I would not recommend this player to anyone. This player is worse than my first dvd player ever--it cannot even remember where I stopped watching the movie, I have to go into scenes and find my spot every time it cuts off!!! The loading times are extreme slow, be sure to have another TV and player set up so you can watch a couple of movies while this one loads! And it sometimes forces you to watch all the previews, there might be 10 on a blu-ray cause of the excessive capacity of the disk. It never lets you pick menu or stop when it takes control, like a little hitler, you will watch it plod along and you will like it! I have taken many rentals back to the store because they just wouldn't play, blu-ray or regular. Some movies studder. I just watched Easy Rider and it would flash back and forth when the scenes changed! The manual looks professional, but when I have a problem, it is never covered! Too many things are in more than one place, and too many things only appear when you have met certain unknown conditions--why can't they just have one menu button, one menu, and everything visible?

 "Stay away" 2009-07-23
By Charles Wood (Austin, Texas United States)
Pros: The picture quality is great, as with any Blu-Ray player.

Cons: Where do I start?

1. It takes FOREVER to load a movie. 3 minutes maybe? Long enough that I put in the disc, then go to pop microwave popcorn, and when I come back it's still loading.

2. During the "coming attractions" part of a disc, almost every keypress on the remote results in a "CANNOT OPERATE" message on the screen. My normal DVD player can skip these--why can't this player?

3. This player is incredibly sensitive to scratches on discs. The slightest imperfection and you'll get freezes, no-sound, skittering fast-forwarded scenes, etc. We rent from NetFlix, and it's unusual that we watch an entire movie without experiencing this problem.

Needless to say, my wife was unimpressed with my purchase. I don't know if these problems are with the player itself or Blu-Ray in general, but I'm now buying an upconverting Oppo DVD player to replace this maddening thing.
